Ancient looking breaks for a classical plaster statue

I am making a plaster statue a little bit similar to the one in the picture below. I need to break some parts of it to make it look old and weathered. What is the best way to do this without risking breaking other parts of the statue? Thank you for any advice ~ Tiff
