There are several good products for sealing ceramic or other porous
containers. If it is very large, I'd suggest using UGL, as found in gallon
containers at most building/home centers. Apply two coats to the inside.
This comes in white or gray, or even a light blue, so paint plan to paint
the interior with black laytex paint.
For small containers, flower pots, etc., I use INDOOR/OUTDOOR Gloss Acrylic
Enamel by Plaid (Apple Barrel) Ceramcoat by Delta has a similar product.
This is a water base paint, available in the craft dept at Wal-mart, etc.
Apply two or three coats to the interior of the pot, with a brush or sponge
applicator, allowing to dry between coats. This is non-toxic, wet or dry,
and does a fantastic job of sealing on any porous surface, including brick,
concrete, terra cotta--whatever. For the outside of the pot, that will
be left outside through the winter, you should paint it too. They have a
clear finish available, or you can use colors--sponge it on, dry brush
etc---get creative. A 2 oz bottle is just over $1, but 8oz bottles are
about $5.
Plug up any large cracks or holes with plumber's putty.
Have fun!
